The United Nations - through a General Assembly resolution - designated 20 October 2010 (20-10-2010) as World Statistics Day. The celebration of World Statistics Day acknowledges the importance of national and international statistics and aims to strengthen the awareness and trust of the public in official statistics.

“ITU has made the collection and dissemination of official statistics on information and communication technologies (ICTs) a high priority. Our data are used to identify trends and market opportunities and to help ICT policy makers and investors to develop and evaluate policy and business strategies. We are fully committed to strengthen statistical capacity in developing countries and to make World Statistics Day a successful event”.

Dr Hamadoun I. Touré, Secretary General of ITU

ITU actively participates in World Statistics Day celebrations in Geneva:

  • ITU is one of the key partners in “Measuring a globalized world: the Geneva contribution”. This event, which is organized  jointly by eight Geneva-based international organizations and coordinated by UNCTAD, will take place on 20 October 2010. It will highlight the importance of international statistics in addressing the most urgent issues that shape today’s economic, social and environmental agenda.

  • On the occasion of World Statistics Day, ITU will release “The World in 2010: ICT Facts and Figures”, which features the latest ICT statistics and highlights the impressive growth in the telecommunication and ICT market. The new data will be presented to the press on October 19th, 2010.
