>> Study Group 5 : Protection against electromagnetic environment effects
Question 9/5 - Interference produced by power lines and electrified railway lines into telecommunication networks
(Continuation of Question 9/5)

Motivation

The electromagnetic interference between telecommunications lines and power and electrified railway lines have been studied by ITU and the results of these studies are reported in the nine volumes of the Directives and in Recommendations K.33, K.53 and K.54. There is a need to maintain these documents and to ensure good coordination between them.

The following Recommendations and Directives, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:
K.5, K.6, K.7, K.8, K.9, K.13, K14, K.19, K.26, K.33, K.53, K.54, K.57 and the Directives, except Volume VIII.

Question

Study items to be considered, but are not limited to:
  • Interference of power and traction systems on telecommunication systems.
    - Interference on other transmission systems than common POTS (Psophometric values), e.g. limits for ISDN and xDSL (high priority);
    - Interference on telecommunication lines by the evolution of harmonics flowing on power lines (medium priority);
    - How to manage the superposition of the effects on telecommunication lines due to induction from more than one power line both at normal operation and during faults (low priority)
  • Protection of telecom installations in High Voltage Power Stations (medium priority);
  • Earth Potential Rise (EPR) when the HV, MV and LV earthing systems are connected (low priority).

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • One or more Recommendations with regard to interference of electric line on telecommunications lines;
  • New Recommendation with regard to the protection of telecom installations in High Voltage Power Stations (medium priority)
  • New Recommendation with regard to Earth Potential Rise (EPR) when the HV, MV and LV earthing systems are connected (low priority)
  • Maintenance and enhancement of some specific Volumes of the Directives
  • Maintenance and enhancement of the existing Recommendations under its responsibility

NOTE: The revision of the Directives should be done in collaboration with CIGRE and UIC.

Relationships

  • Recommendations: K-series
  • Questions: 11, 12 and 13/5
  • Study Groups: ITU-T SG 15
  • International bodies CIGRE, UIC
