Question 5/12 - Telephonometric methodologies for handset and headset terminals
(Continuation of Question 5/12)

Motivation

Question 5/12 in the study period 2001/2004 has been dealing with handsets and headsets testing methodologies.

The major achievement of the work was the release of the new Recommendation P.380 regarding headsets testing using a HATS.

During the last 4 years, the design of mobile phones and their associated voice communication accessories has been continuing to move to smaller and smaller size. Furthermore, the need for the integration of new or bigger mechanical parts, such as screen, cameras, etc. also had an impact on the acoustical design of the handsets.

These facts lead to a challenging situation regarding the way these devices should be tested realistically . So there is a need for improving testing methodologies and changing some parts of the current recommendations in order to better take into account this evolution.

The following Recommendations, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:

P.51, P.57, P.58, P.64, P.79, P.360, P.380

P.16, P.32, P.48, P.52, P.53, P.54, P.55, P.61, P.75, P.76, P.78, P.Sup20

Question

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

- What enhancements in the existing Recommendations P.57, P.58 and P.64 need to be defined in order to accommodate for the evolution in the acoustical design of handsets and headsets?

- In call centers the question of the acoustic levels to the operators has become an important issue. What enhancements to the current Recommendation P.360 are needed to define accurately the relevant noise dose descriptors and the relevant testing methodologies?

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Revision of Recommendation P.57:

  • Definition of High and low output impedance of receivers
  • Recommending the use of HATS for all types of handsets
  • Broadening the use of the type 3.2 coupler
  • Possible revision of DRP-ERP correction for closed ear-conditions.

- Revision of Recommendation P.64:

  • Investigation shall be made on how to open the current recommendation by allowing the use of a “Manufacturer Recommended test position “ for testing of handsets on HATS, irrespective of the handset technology, which might be different from the current standardised HATS position.

- Revision of the Recommendation P.360 taking into account acoustic shock and acoustic exposure (in close cooperation with ETSI STQ).

- Investigation on the use of other reference points than ERP - for example free-field and DRP - used to define sensitivity masks and Loudness Ratings.

Relationships

Recommendations: P.300 series

Questions: 3/12, 4/12 and 6/12
