Session 1: Energy Efficiency –
Carbon Reduction: Unlocking the Energy
Efficiency Potential Using ICTs
The last two decades have seen ICT has play a significant role in improving economic productivity. The stage is set for further significant productivity improvements, helping transform the world to a more sustainable, lower carbon and more resource-efficient future. Green technologies such as a video conferencing, smart grid, smart buildings, replacing paper with bits and better supply chain management have the potential to play a significant role in reducing GHG emissions across all sectors.

Session 2: Smart Applications to
support future growth and care for the
environment
The world is using more and more energy, as its population continues to increase and the general rise in average living standards continues. To continue living our lives as we do, we need to make more efficient use of our natural resources. Furthermore as climate change continues to affect our water resources and elevate threats to public health, policymakers must act quickly to enact well-informed, environmentally sound policies and standards that address the threats we already face while preparing for the predicted challenges of tomorrow.
This session will provide an overview of how cities can deliver better electronic services to citizens and how ICT can help to deliver solutions that will bring wide-ranging and cost-efficient benefits that protect both our health and the planet.

Session 3: Driving the Transition to a
Low Carbon Economy: Smart Grids, Energy
Efficiency and Climate Change
The generation of electricity is
responsible for about 40% of global CO2
emissions, presenting an enormous
opportunity for savings due to smart
grid/metering technologies. For example,
improving the efficiency of the U.S.
electricity grid by 5% would alone be
the equivalent of eliminating the fuel
use and carbon emissions of 53 million
cars.
In this context, the smart grid emerges
as a critical tool to address global
climate change.
The smart grid is an innovation that has
the potential to revolutionise the
transmission, distribution and
conservation of energy. It employs
digital technology to improve
transparency and to increase reliability
as well as efficiency. ICTs and
especially sensors and sensor networks
play a major role in turning traditional
grids into smart grids.
This session will provide an overview of
different solutions, best practices,
initiatives on smart grids and climate
change

Session 5: The ICT Industry and Its
“Green Responsibility”: How to turn an
E-Waste Challenge into an Opportunity
As the deployment of ICTs continues the amount of waste from the sector increases. e-Waste, for example the disposal of mobile phones, is an enormous challenge. Planning and action in areas such as collection system, e-disposal, life-cycle analysis, and recycling is needed.
This session will provide an overview of:
Eco-friendly technology materials.
Technologies and life-cycle analysis for ICT goods and services.
Sustainable development and e-waste management.

Help Countries Adapt to the Effects of
Climate Change
Adaptation refers to measures to address changes already occurring as a result of global warming. These changes have a negative impact on ecosystems and on human habitat affecting access to natural resources such as drinking water and farming.
ICTs have great potential and use in collecting, analyzing, planning and disseminating information on climate change. This session will look at how ICTs can help in adapting to the new environmental challenges, especially in developing countries with a special focus on the ITU project in Ghana.
