Question 16/5 – EMC requirements for the Information Society
(Continuation of Question 16/5)

Motivation

The emergence of the Information Society is leading to the use of a complex variety of both wireless and wireline technologies for the exchange of voice and data over traditional telecommunications networks. Examples include:

  • the deployment of public Wi-Fi access points within airports, train stations, restaurants and hotels for data transfer by Personal Computers, Personal Digital Assistants etc.;
  • the use of new Access Network technologies for the delivery of broadband data services, such as Power Line Communications (PLC) technology;
  • the use of new wireless Access technologies (Wi-MAX, UWB, NFC, .etc).

The adoption of each new technology changes the Electromagnetic (EM) environment within which these new and existing technologies operate. Hence it is necessary to study methodologies for predicting and mitigating EMC problems that may prevent these technologies from working successfully.

The following Recommendation, in force at the time of approval of this Question, falls under its responsibility:

  • None

Question

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Characterization of the Electromagnetic (EM) environment created by the operation of the new radio services in different frequency band range (e.g. Wi-Fi, Wi-MAX, UWB);
  • EMC requirements and mitigation methodology to allow deployment within non-telecommunications environment (e.g. airport, railway station, train, hospital, hotel, vehicle etc.);
  • Evaluation and prediction methodology of performance degradation due to electromagnetic interference between different wireless technologies;
  • Evaluation and prediction methodology of electromagnetic interference between wireless and wireline services;
  • Compatibility between wireless technologies and non telecommunications equipment (e.g. hearing aids, microwave oven using 2.4 GHz).

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • A new recommendation on “The electromagnetic (EM) characterization of the radiated environment in the 2.4GHz unlicensed band created by radio services”;
  • A new recommendation on EMC requirements and test methods of interference between different wireless technologies combined in the same equipment.

An up-to-date status of work under this Question is contained in the SG 5 Work Program (use URL as shown in the table below).
