Question 6/5 – Bonding configurations and earthing of telecommunication systems in the global environment
(Continuation of Question 6/5)

Motivation

In recent years, modern society has experienced a high and steady growth of dependency on telecommunications. In this context, the reliability of telecommunication services has become an issue of high priority. Bonding and earthing of electronic equipment inside telecommunications buildings and customer premises is one way to achieve this reliability.

The evolution of the power architecture of present and future ICT systems leads to the need to study the impact of the new power architecture, operated by direct voltage current (DC) or rectified current sources, on the bonding and earthing of the equipment.

Furthermore the evolution of telecommunication network leads to the need to study bonding configurations and earthing of remote sites in co-location environment and of telecommunication centers.
This Question impacts climate change issues by ensuring that the adequate resistibility requirements for equipment and protective measures for installations reduce the amount of equipment and installation damage. By reducing damages less fossils fuels are burnt (personnel do not have to drive to a site to repair equipment) and less manufacturing is required (less replacement equipment is needed).
The following Recommendations and Handbook, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:

  • K.27, K.35, K.66, K.73 and “Earthing and Bonding Handbook”.

Question

The purpose of this question is to produce new recommendations and to revise the existing ones regarding the bonding configurations and earthing of electronic equipment inside telecommunication buildings and customer premises as well as remote electronic sites.

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • Bonding configurations and earthing of remote sites in co-location environment and of telecommunication centers;
  • Guideline for earthing and power feeding systems in co-located environment;
  • Maintenance methods of bonding configurations and earthing.

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • One or more Recommendations on bonding configurations and earthing of remote sites in co-located environment and of telecommunication centre;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of existing Recommendations K.27, K.35, K.66 and K.73 with better linkage and coordination between these recommendations and other recommendations within the K-series;
  • Maintenance and enhancement of "Earthing & Bonding Handbook".

An up-to-date status of work under this Question is contained in the SG 5 Work Program (use URL as shown in the table below).
