Question 10/13 – Identification of evolving IMT-2000 systems and beyond
(Continuation of Question 3/19)

Motivation

IMT-2000 has been the most important ITU initiative for last three study periods, spanning all three sectors. Since evolving IMT (formerly IMT-2000) systems are being standardized by a number of recognized SDOs through their participation in Partnership project, Q3/19 has worked on facilitating the recognition of those systems and their adoption by the broader ITU community. As many as 10 Recommendations in the Q.174x series are now in force, with 2 more to be published by the end of the 2005-2008 study period.

As the mobile systems evolve beyond the original requirements set for IMT-2000 the SDOs will continue to deliver various releases of their respective systems. The new ITU initiative on NGN and especially the FMC work will further propel the evolution of common core networks. New recommendations will need to be produced to identify those evolving IMT systems and beyond.

This Question shall be responsible for the Q.174x series of recommendations.

Question

Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:

  • What architectures, detailed specifications and releases have been and will be produced by recognised SDOs which make up the evolving IMT systems and beyond?
  • What enhancements to existing Recommendations are required to provide energy savings directly or indirectly in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) or in other industries? What enhancements to developing or new Recommendations are required to provide such energy savings?

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop recommendations identifying the architecture as well as detailed specifications of each release (version) of each evolving IMT family member making reference to relevant specifications produced by the ITU-T recognised SDOs.
  • Recommendations shall be produced for the following evolving IMT family members:
    1. GSM evolved UMTS core network with UTRAN/GERAN access network,
    2. ANSI-41 evolved core network with cdma2000 access network.
