Nowadays, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) has been deployed within NGN and over LTE-based networks all over the globe. Protocol enhancements for IMS would be needed in support of roaming, interworking, security, and real-time services innovation such as interactive services in LTE/IMT-2020 networks and beyond. An overall landscape of IMS protocol enhancements could accelerate the global IMS deployment, interworking, and roaming in LTE/IMT-2020 environment.
Since 2007, ITU-T has been working on different aspects related to protocols which are being used already in IMS-based networks. As of today, ITU-T SG11 developed series of related standards such as ITU-T Q.3400 series (Service and session control protocols), ITU-T Q.3640-Q.3655 (VoLTE/ViLTE network signaling), ITU-T Q.3617-Q.3639 (Service and session control protocols – supplementary services based on SIP-IMS), ITU-T Q.4000-Q.4039 (Testing specifications for SIP-IMS) and several related Q Supplements (Q Suppl.69, Q Suppl.70 and Q Suppl.72).
Among recent achievements are standards which define requirements for VoLTE/ViLTE interconnection and relevant testing specifications (ITU-T Q.3640, ITU-T Q.3953). Also, SG11 approved standards which define infrastructure ENUM and related interfaces in support of IMS interconnection (ITU-T Q.3643, ITU-T Q.3645). All those SG11 activities are in line with Resolution 93 (WTSA-16) “Interconnection of 4G, IMT-2020 networks and beyond” and could help operators to solve interworking and roaming issues on VolTE/ViLTE networks and beyond.
The aim of the workshop was to give an overview of achieved outcomes and ongoing activities of standardization work for IMS protocols in ITU-T and other SDOs, to share the worldwide practice and perspectives on IMS over LTE/IMT-2020 and beyond networks, to identify main issues and discuss the way forward to improve the standardization work for IMS over LTE/IMT-2020 and beyond networks. This Workshop also provided a platform for participants to share their views, findings, latest research, and experience in relation to IMS and Voice over LTE/IMT-2020 technologies.
