Workshop on working together towards a better future – a guide to Scope 3 emissions reporting

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in collaboration with the GSMA (mobile industry association) and the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI),  organised a Workshop on Working together towards a better future – a guide to Scope 3 emissions reporting for companies which supply goods or services to telecommunication operators whixch took place virtually on the 14 September 2023 from 09h30 to 11h00 CEST and 17h00 to 18h30 CEST.

Introduction

The new Scope 3 Guidance for Telecommunication Operators, developed by the GSMA, GeSI and the ITU was launched in July 2023. This guidance harmonises methods for telecommunication operators to assess and report their Scope 3 emissions and to increase coverage and transparency. Scope 3 emissions are the indirect emissions from a telecommunication operators value chain, including their supply chain and products used by customers. These emissions are much higher than a telecommunication operator’s own Scope 1 and 2 emissions. With COP28 approaching, now more than ever telecommunication operators must work with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions.

Objectives

This event brought together experts in the field to discuss the challenges and opportunities for suppliers in calculating and reducing emissions in the goods and services they provide to telecommunication operators. This event provided a supplier outlook of the newly released guide on Scope 3 Guidance for telecommunication operators. This guidance is intended to supplement, not supersede, existing standards.

Target audience

This event  was attended by representatives from company’s supplying goods or services to telecommunication operators around the world. Participation in the workshop was free of charge and open to all.
