Introduction

At the kind invitation of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Regional Office for the Americas, the eighth ITU and World Health Organization (WHO) workshop on “AI for Health” was held on 21 January 2020 followed by the eighth meeting of the ITU-T Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health (FG-AI4H) from 22 to 24 January 2020. Both events took place at the same venue in Brasilia, Brazil.

The workshop was jointly organized by ITU and WHO. The aim of the workshop was to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and policy-makers to discuss standardization opportunities and challenges for the assessment of AI for health solutions and to identify use cases and data required for the evaluation and validation with open benchmarks. The workshop was followed by the eighth meeting of the ITU-T FG-AI4H. The meeting included an evaluation of the progress of ITU-T FG-AI4H towards its mandate—to develop a platform for the standardized assessment of artificial intelligence for health. In addition, the feasibility of new use cases were considered and overarching themes (e.g., ethics) were discussed.

The workshop and meeting were held in English only.

Target Audience

Participation in the workshop and the meeting was open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, Academic Institutions, and to any individual from a country that is a member of ITU who wishes to contribute to the work. This included individuals who are also members of international, regional, and national organizations. Participation in the workshop and meeting was free of charge.
