line-merging-caption.pngThe "Expert Group on Communications Technology for Automated Driving" is dedicated to exploring and advancing communications technologies for automated driven vehicles. We aim to enable the equipment of all new vehicles from about 2030 with the necessary communications technology to enable vehicles with ADS active to drive as safely as practical, including doing reliable automated merging, among other applications. The Expert Group operates in accordance with the ITU CITS and welcomes participants from ITU members, UNECE WP.29 entities, and Standards Developing Organizations involved in ITU CITS. Our team, comprising experts from the automotive and wireless communications industries, is analysing current vehicle communications technology, recommending solutions for international standardization and related regulation, and identifying areas requiring further attention. We are committed to setting the groundwork for vehicle communications technology for vehicles to be delivered in 2030 and later that supports safe driving and determined, reliable merging by vehicles with active ADS, ultimately enhancing road safety and cooperation among vehicles.

Topics in Focus:
Our Expert Group addresses a range of critical topics related to communications technology for automated driving. These topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating the current state of vehicle communications technology for automated driving along with determining the size of the vehicles to be supported and the related space needed.
  • Recommending solutions that necessitate international standardization.
  • Identifying timelines for the installation of communications technology in vehicles, possibly by 2030, to support reliable merging by vehicles with active ADS.
  • Recognizing application areas for vehicle safety that can benefit from additional international standardization.
  • Identifying spectrum requirements, where applicable, and collaborating with interested Member States for necessary actions.

How to get involved:
Participation in our Expert Group is open to a diverse range of stakeholders. If you are interested in contributing to the development of communications technology for automated driving, you can get involved as follows:

  1. Join the ITU CITS: Participate in the ITU Collaboration on ITS Communications Standards to engage with our activities.
  2. Collaborate with Experts: Work closely with experts from various backgrounds within the Expert Group, including members from the automotive and wireless communications industries.
  3. Contribute to Standardization: Share your insights and findings to help shape deployable international standards for the automotive and communications industries.
  4. Stay Informed: Stay updated on our progress and key developments in the field of automated driving and communications technology to roll-out the solution as targeted.

We look forward to your participation in this critical initiative that will pave the way for the safe and efficient deployment of automated driving systems. Together, we can drive innovation and progress in this transformative industry.
