“Leveraging AI and ML to unlock the full potential of telecommunications/ICTs​."​ - Mr Kangchan Lee, the JCA-ML Chair

Initially established as JCA-ML by SG13 in July 2022, the group commenced operations in March 2023 before transitioning to its current designation as JCA-AI. The scope of JCA-ML was to coordinate the ITU-T work programme on applications of machine learning and its related standardization work for telecommunications/ICTs. The JCA seeks cooperation and collaboration from external standards development organizations, consortia, forums, and academia studying AI and ML applications and their relevant works. 

To better address the complexities of modern technologies, the group changed its name and scope to include Artificial Intelligence, becoming the JCA-AI in January 2026 during TSAG meeting. The group reports directly to the TSAG.​
