Strengthening Training Capacity in Wireless Networking in Africa

Project No 7RAF09078
Title Strengthening Training Capacity in Wireless Networking in Africa
Description This project will contribute concretely to develop networks of expertise by transferring low-cost wireless technology know-how to African training and/or educational institutions, by mentoring students and sharing knowledge through e-learning, augmented by missions to transfer specific skills. This will involve the establishment of training centres on wireless technologies at selected African training and/or educational institutions, training of trainers on related Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) curricula, provision of training materials (e.g., lab bundles), and the launching of specific training opportunities. The project will encourage the participation of women and young people in the ICT sector.

Achievements

The objective of the project was to strengthen Wireless Networking in Sub-Saharan Africa through the establishment of hubs for wireless networking skills transfer in two or three selected ICT training institutions. The project trained trainers, provided curricula as well as training materials (lab bundles) for use within these training institutions.
As a result, a total of 56 people were trained, from 17 countries in Africa. The breakdown of the participants to the two institutions shows that 26 participants from 7 French speaking countries, attended the training at ESMT in Dakar, Senegal, while, 30 participants from 7 English speaking countries attended the training at KIST in Kigali, Rwanda.
The project succeeded in delivering real capacity building for the region. This was in the form of the original set of trainers (6), who were then able to impart their knowledge to their colleagues.
In addition, Wireless Networking Training kits were delivered to the participants. All the training centers received training materials that they could use to  conduct the training on their own.
