Title | Building a network of women leaders | |
Description |
The ITU Development Sector (ITU–D) Network of Women (NoW) is critically important in addressing this challenge, by providing a platform for building the capacity of women and supporting their equal participation in decision-making in the telecommunication development sector. NoW encourages gender balance across all ITU-D activities and events, with particular focus on the activities leading up to the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC). The network aims to build a community where female delegates support each other, expand their network, advocate and share experiences and knowledge. The network was established as a pilot initiative in 2021, covering all events in preparation for and during the WTDC that year, and resulting in increased visibility of female delegates in ITU-D, including in more senior roles and increased responsibilities within their respective delegations at WTDC and at subsequent such events. Since its establishment, several NoW activities and events have been undertaken, including fireside discussions and social events that have brought together women participating in ITU-D events. Regional chapters of NoW need to be reinforced to ensure their sustainability and continued value to members in the respective regions. The project “Building a Network of women leaders” aims at reinforcing the work achieved in ITU-D since 2021. For an initial period of twelve (12) months, ITU will reinforce the work conducted during the pilot phase of NoW, with a view to further advancing its work at the regional level and providing relevant skills to female delegates participating in NoW and in ITU-D regional networks. The project’s strategy is to engage women delegates from different ITU Member States to contribute meaningfully to ITU-D activities. During a subsequent implementation period of six (6) months, a report documenting lessons learned and associated recommendations will be produced. By building a network of women delegates to exchange views, and challenges and to strengthen capacity and skills development on ITU-D related matters, the project will seek to advance the representation and participation of women in platforms and mechanisms such as ITU-D Study Groups, the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR), and the Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).
