Question 15/16 Circuit multiplication equipment and systems |
|
(Continuation of Question 5/15)
- Motivation
Voice-band compression equipment is utilized worldwide to optimize transmission bandwidth capacity. SG 15 has developed the
G.76x series of Recommendations for Circuit Multiplication Equipment (CME), systems and related Telecommunication Management
Network (TMN) aspects (this series is now under SG 16 responsibility). As traffic characteristics change, there is a market
need to apply the following aspects in a new generation of compression equipment reflecting the experiences gained from
previous generations of equipment:
- Enhancement of signal compression and channel multiplexing techniques to accommodate new types of signals and services
- Enhancement of system controls to maintain end-to-end signal qualities as high as possible
The following major Recommendations, in force at the time of approval of this Question, fall under its responsibility:
G.763, G.764, G.765, G.766, G.767, G.768, G.769/Y.1242
- Study Items
Study items to be considered include, but are not limited to:
- What new or revised speech signal compression techniques should be used?
- How should the Recommendations be updated to account for changes in end-user equipment technologies?
- How can the capabilities of voice-band signal compression be extended to account for new network services?
- How can the user ensure proper end-to-end operation of speech and voice-band signals compression equipment?
- How can CME be accommodated to new network transport technologies (e.g. Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS))?
- How can CME attain better performance with improved compression algorithms?
- Tasks
Tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Completion of draft new Recommendation I.733 and its further enhancements
- Revision of Recommendation G.766
- Revision of existing Digital Circuit Multiplication Equipment (DCME) Recommendations G.763, G.767, G.768 to implement Tandem Avoidance Mechanisms
- Enhancement of Recommendation G.769/Y.1242 to support transport of different kind of signals including Text Telephony signals, Signalling transport and larger number of channels in a single IP connection
- Enhancement of Recommendation G.769/Y.1242 to support IP trunk interfaces.
An up-to-date status of work under this Question is contained in the
SG 16 Work Programme.
