Roundtable : ICTs as Both Enabler and Driver of Sustainable Solutions
Information and Communications Technologies have a profound impact on society, and their production and use have important consequences for development in economic, social and environmental areas. The extent to which ICTs also affect progress towards environmental sustainability in an economy is an issue that is still under debate, although there is increasing evidence that significant opportunities are involved while most of ICTs potential remains untapped.
The ICT sector itself is called upon to demonstrate commitment to reducing its own impact on the environment, in particular in areas such as consumption of energy and natural resources, greenhouse gas emissions and waste production and management.
This roundtable presented examples of how ICT can contribute to the green agenda, in particular via proactive initiatives such as green ICT procurement or ICT based solutions that support sustainable growth.
