ITU announces revision to a set of Recommendations on frame
relay giving more flexible and sophisticated ways of providing
frame relay services
|
The International Telecommunication Union
(ITU) announces today that Study Group 7 of the Telecommunication
Standardization Sector approved new version of a set of frame
relay related Recommendations at its plenary held in Geneva.
Currently frame relay networks are already deployed worldwide to
provide cost effective data transmission services. However, in
most cases the services are on permanent virtual circuits (PVC)
basis, just replacing leased lines connecting two fixed end
points. The new version of frame relay Recommendations has been
developed focusing on the real industry and user requirements,
and is now ready to offer the data communication market
opportunities to introduce much more flexible and sophisticated
ways of providing frame relay services such as on demand
connection, numbering plan, handling of data with different
priorities in terms of transfer delay and frame loss ratio,
multicast communications and data compression. In particular, the
user-network interface Recommendation X.36 and the
network-network interface Recommendation X.76 are now applicable
to data rates up to 622 Mbit/s.
The approved Recommendations also include
standards to define performance parameters and objectives for
quality of service for the benefit of both network operators and
users.
"With this, frame relay services are now
considered applicable to convey multimedia data including voice,
text, picture and video as well as IP packets over frame relay
connections", said Yukio Hiramatsu, Working Party 2
Chairman of Study Group 7. "In the course of developing
these recommendations Study Group 7, as the lead Study Group on
frame relay under the ITU-T, conducted coordination with the
Frame Relay Forum that is providing implementation agreements to
the industry, and has now achieved full compatibility".
At the same plenary meeting, Study Group 7
also defined a work programme further focusing on the market
needs related to frame relay services including the key aspects
on interworking with ATM and the Internet. This work will
definitely form one of the major issues that should be tackled by
the ITU-T for the next years to meet market demands of the
information age.
Following their today approval, the set of new
versions of frame relay related Recommendations will soon be
available online on the ITU-T Web page (http://www.itu.int/itudoc/itu-t/approved/x/index.html)
for pre-published X-series of Recommendations.
