ITU-T G.9806建议书描述了一种比现有ITU-T点对点接入系统数据速率更高的双向单光纤点对点光接入系统。ITU-T G.986建议书支持光接入业务使用1 Gbit/s及以上频率，其中包括光分布网（ODN）规范、物理层规范、服务要求和操作以及管理与维护（OAM）规范。
