Recently as network capabilities have progressed, the emerging immersive media like AR/VR garner popularity across industries. Further advances in multimedia, such as XR and holographic communications, expect to make services more immersive and interactive. In order to bring interactive capabilities to immersive services such as telemedicine and conference, there is high demand for studies on the scenarios and requirements for interactive immersive services.
Interactive Immersive Services (IIS) require collection, processing and transmission of interactive information (including video, audio, tactile/haptic, etc.) to support real-time interactions among users and/or objects. The structure of IIS scenarios may be categorically divided into point to point use cases such as telemedicine, prototype experiment, automobile maintenance, remote shopping assistance etc, and point to multipoint use cases such as immersive conference, immersive education, holographic classroom, etc.
Based on the studies of scenarios and use cases, this work item specifies high-level requirements including support for interactive capabilities, synchronous transmission of concurrent streams, intelligent distribution of massive multimedia data, edge computing, intelligent perception and scheduling of QoS, and multimedia stream embellishing.
For the time being, this work items might be related to immersive services developed in ITU-T and 3GPP, such as ITU-T H.430 series and 3GPP TR 26.928, which are currently focusing on ILE and XR services respectively without touching the interactive aspects. Thus, further study is needed to specify the requirements for interactive immersive services.
The goal of this document is to provide clear definition and high-level requirements of interactive immersive services.
