Summary: Electricity from the national electricity grid is an important component in the delivery of telecommunication services. However, many developing countries have limited capacity to generate and distribute electricity, resulting in frequent power outages that affect Quality of Service (QoS) delivery in the telecom industry. The lack of stable and reliable electricity supply is a major challenge for telecommunication operators, who have to provide their own power solutions to maintain and expand telecommunications services infrastructure. Telecommunication networks rely on an intricate infrastructure that includes data centres, cellular towers, and other critical equipment. All these components require a continuous power supply to function optimally. Unfortunately, power outages can disrupt the seamless network performance with ripple effects as follows: - Network availability: Power outages can cause telecommunication networks to shut down completely, leading to a blackout of communication services. As a result, individuals and businesses lose access to voice calls, internet connectivity, and other vital services. - Network performance: Power outages may lead to a degradation in performance of the remain part of the network due to overload of service requests from the offline part of the network. This can lead to dropped calls, slow data throughput, and unreliable connection for mobile phones. - Public safety concerns: Power outages can disrupt emergency services, making it difficult for individuals in distress to contact authorities promptly. This jeopardizes public safety and adds an additional layer of urgency to the need for power backup solutions. - Economic Losses: Telecommunication is vital for other sectors of the economy. Power outages may lead to loss of business and slow the economic growth of a country.
