Summary: Traditional sensors and V2X communication systems used in Connected Automated Vehicles (CAVs) have limitations. This makes it difficult for CAVs to fully understand their surroundings and ensure safety. Millimeter wave (mmWave) technology offers a solution. mmWave provides 2 main advantages for CAVs: · Broadband communication: mmWave allows for high-speed data transfer with minimal delay, enabling real-time sharing of raw sensor data between CAVs and roadside Unit (RSUs). · High-resolution sensing: mmWave sensors provide superior detection and characterization of objects on the road, even in challenging conditions like fog or rain. To improve the driving environment perception, collaborative sharing and integration of raw sensor data / V2X message among CAVs and RSUs need to be improved with network technologies to provide the enhanced transportation service and application requirements. Cooperative Driving environment Perception (CDP) provides cooperative perception by integrating mmWave sensing and mmWave/V2X communication and using the collaborative sharing of sensor data among CAVs and RSUs. This expands CAV’s driving environmental awareness beyond the limitation of individual CAV sensors. This draft Recommendation provides “framework and requirements of cooperative driving environment perception for connected automated vehicles”. The framework and its requirements can serve as a foundation document to develop the next phase standards.
