Summary: The evolution of IoT can be divided into three stages: the first stage being connectivity, the second stage being intelligence, and the third stage being autonomy. Currently, IoT technology is positioned at the early phase of the second stage, which focuses on intelligence. In addition, most of the standards development in the field of IoT technology has been focused on connectivity-based IoT standards. However, there is a gradual emergence of standards for intelligent IoT as well. Nevertheless, in the context of autonomous IoT, standard development has been primarily concentrated on service technologies. Through analyses such as those presented in Table 2, it is evident how the evolution of standard technologies has progressed alongside the evolution of IoT technology. It highlights that the standardization phase of IoT is still in its early stages when it comes to developing intelligent standards. Recommendation ITU-T Y.4417 (06/2018) specifies a framework of self-organization networking in IoT environments with characteristics, requirements, functional architectures, and functionalities. The framework manages the functionalities to enable intelligent and autonomous services for IoT network technology. However, the functionalities within the framework – including the Coordinator election, Initialization and configuration, Identification, Data forwarding and delivery, Network recovery, and Routing and path discovery – are defined without considering the technical concepts and characteristics of intelligent IoT and autonomous IoT. As a result, Recommendation ITU-T Y.4417 needs to be revised to achieve a certain level of standard quality maturity to better configure networks for the coming intelligent and autonomous IoT environments.
