Mr. Houlin Zhao
Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, ITU
Born on 7 March 1950 in Jiangsu (China), Houlin ZHAO graduated from Nanjing
University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) in 1975. Between 1979 and
1980, he studied as a visiting scholar in Switzerland. He joined the
University of Essex (United Kingdom) in 1984, where he obtained a Master of
Science degree in Telematics in 1985.
From 1975 to 1986, he worked as an engineer in the Designing Institute of
the Chinese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, responsible for
projects in the areas of telex, data communication, non-voice transmission,
telephone switching and mobile networks. He took an active part in his
country’s experts meetings on national telecommunication standards. He
received a second prize in 1985 for his science and technology achievements
in the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. In addition, his work in
the Departments of Planning, Capital Construction and Network Maintenance in
the Ministry earned him an engineering project prize for his outstanding
performance and contributions in the planning, designing and construction of
a number of major national network projects. Between 1982 and 1983, he
participated in CCITT Study Group meetings.
Mr. Zhao joined the CCITT Secretariat (now TSB) in 1986.
Mr. Zhao was elected Director of TSB at the 1998 Plenipotentiary Conference
in Minneapolis (USA), and took office on 1 February 1999. Mr. Zhao was
re-elected for a second term (2003-2006) as Director of TSB at the 2002
Plenipotentiary Conference in Marrakesh (Morocco).
Mr. Mick Reeve,
Group Technology Officer, BT
Mick Reeve is Group Technology Officer in BT, responsible for BT’s overall
networks and systems architectures as well as for standards activities.
He is 55 and has worked for BT for over 36 years, in a wide range of
architecture, design and development jobs, including optical systems,
switching and intelligence and operational support systems.
Mick has published widely in the telecomms field and holds a number of
patents in optical communications.
Mick serves as a Board member for the Telemanagement Forum, the WiMAX forum
and ATIS and is a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Ulrich Schoen
President, Systems Engineering, Siemens
Born 1953, studied Mathematics & Physics at the University of Frankfurt/M.,
joined the Wuppertal Gesamthochschule as research fellow in 1979 and
received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1983. Dr. Schoen joined the public
telecommunications business division of Siemens AG in 1985. Since 1996 Dr.
Schoen was the Vice President of R&D and responsible for the development of
the call control SW for the EWSD switching system. In 1998 Dr. Schoen was
nominated as CEO for ZWUT S.A., Warszawa, the Siemens Company in Poland. In
October 2000 Dr. Schoen was appointed as President of the newly founded
business division Siemens ICN Access Solutions being responsible for the
Broadband Access business of Siemens. Since October 2002 Dr. Schoen is the
President of Com Care Core Development (previous ICN CP SE), Systems
Engineering. Dr. Schoen is a member of VDE/ITG.
Mr. Enrico Deluchi,
Head of Marketing, Europe, Cisco Systems
Enrico Deluchi is Managing Director of Marketing for Cisco in the European and
Emerging Markets, a position he has held since May 2005.
With responsibility for driving Cisco’s overall marketing operations,
Deluchi is supported by a team based at Cisco operations and offices in two
of Cisco’s five geographic regions: European Markets encompass 20 countries
across Europe, representing the largest revenue earning region for Cisco
outside the US; Emerging Markets comprises over 120 countries and unifies
Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS, and the Middle
East and Africa.
Within these two regions, Deluchi is responsible for market and competitive
intelligence, advertising, public relations, industry analyst relations,
sponsorships and events. He also oversees internal communications and the
executive briefing programme for key customers.
His career at Cisco spans almost a decade, across several senior positions
within the company. Most recently he was charged with developing the
Alternative Service Provider (SP) market across Europe, the Middle East and
Africa (EMEA).1
With more than 15 years industry experience he has held a number of senior
management roles at leading organisations including AT&T and Italtel. Since
the start of deregulation in Europe in 1994, he has been at the forefront in
advising and working with alternative SP’s in EMEA and helping them to
develop their business strategies around the provision of Internet services.
Deluchi is a frequent speaker at industry events throughout the European and
Emerging Markets. He holds a Masters in Electronic Engineering from Milan’s
Polytechnic.
He currently resides in Milan, Italy with his family and is a keen outdoor
sportsman enjoying skiing, sailing and diving. 1Cisco evolved its worldwide field organisation to a new coverage model in May 2005. Emerging and European Markets have replaced the previous EMEA geographical structure
Mr. Phil Holmes
Director of Architecture and Technology, Motorola Networks EMEA
Phil Holmes is Director of Architecture and Technology for Motorola Networks
in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He is responsible for ensuring
that Motorola's overall network architecture develops in line with advances
in telecommunications in the EMEA region and GSM/UMTS marketplace and has
managerial ownership for EMEA reference network architecture.
Phil joined Motorola in September 2005 following a long and highly
successful career with BT. Most recently he was CTO of BT Exact, BT's R&D
organisation and was one of the key technical drivers of BT’s 21st Century
Network architecture. He was also responsible for BT’s standards activities.
Prior to his CTO role, Phil spent over 10 years working in Operational
Support Systems (OSS) development, with a specific focus on OSS
architecture. He was chairman of the TeleManagement Forum’s Service Provider
Leadership Council, and is well known as a subject matter expert on OSS and
Next Generation Networks at Industry conferences.
Mr. Brian McFadden
Chief Research Officer, Nortel
Brian McFadden is the Chief Research Officer of Nortel. Appointed to this
position in March 2005, Brian is responsible for keeping the future in front
of Nortel and its customers and for ensuring that Nortel remains at the
forefront of technology leadership. As part of this role, Brian has
accountability for the Company’s next-generation architectural vision,
advanced technology and solutions research, and R&D effectiveness. Brian is
also leading the Company’s Security initiatives.
Prior to his role as CRO, Brian held roles in Nortel as Chief Technology
Officer, President of Optical Networks and President of the company’s
Optical Metro business, where he led the team that successfully completed
the acquisition of Ottawa-based networking start-up Cambrian Systems in
December 1998.
During his 26-year career with Nortel, Brian has held a variety of key roles
across the company, in areas such as systems engineering, product marketing,
and product management, including global product line responsibility for
Nortel’s industry-leading OC-192 and OC-48 fiber-optic transmission systems.
Brian’s career with Nortel has also included assignments in Seoul, Korea;
Maidenhead, England; and Ottawa and Montreal, Canada.
Brian holds a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of
Waterloo (1977). Based in Ottawa, Canada, Brian is married and has two
children.
Mr. Thomas W. Anderson
Director, Chief Technology Office, Lucent Technologies
Tom Anderson is a senior member of the CTO group for Lucent Technologies
Network Solutions Group. As a 28+ year veteran of the telecommunications
industry, Tom has held numerous positions within Bell Laboratories, AT&T and
Lucent in the areas of product development, systems engineering, product
management, and architecture. An expert in multi-media and voice services,
switching technologies, circuit/data integration and related protocols, Tom
holds 10 patents. Throughout his career, he has functioned as Chief
Architect on a variety of projects many of which have resulted in the
creation of de facto industry standards. He is a frequently requested
speaker at both industry and customer events. Tom has received numerous
awards within the Bell Labs community in recognition of his contribution to
both the industry and the corporation, including the AT&T Architectural
Award for business-impacting technological leadership excellence. He
graduated from Michigan Technology University summa cum laude with a BS in
Electrical Engineering. Post-graduate work includes an MSEE and well as EE
doctoral work at the University of Minnesota.
