Workshop on "Next Generation Networks"
Geneva,  9-10 July 2003

Abstract

"The presentation discusses the commonalities and differences between the Internet general principles and the concept of Next Generation Networks. In the course of this discussion, it distinguishes between the Internet viewed as a technology and the Internet viewed as a philosophy for structuring networks. Next Generation Networks are portrayed as Managed IP networks that fulfil specific operators requirements and provide value added service building blocks to service providers. The presentation emphasises the need for developing standards that ensure interoperability between major network elements and service building blocks. It also stresses the need to address service interaction issues and provide technology independent solutions that meet operators and end-users requirements, which will require significant standardization efforts.”
