Gerard Kuyt, Prysmian Group, The Netherlands
Gerard Kuyt (born in 1950, Katwijk, The
Netherlands) received his B.Sc degree in
Electrical Engineering at the The Hague
University in 1973. In the same year, he
joined the Philips Research Laboratories
in Eindhoven, in a new group on optical
transmission.
In 1981 he joined Philips Optical Fibre
(taken over by Draka in 1994 and since
2011 part of the Prysmian Group),
starting in the measurement &
applications department. From 1992, he
changed position to the Sales &
Marketing group; currently he is Product
Line Manager Optical Fiber, stationed in
Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
He is active in standardization e.g.
CENELEC TC86A, ITU-T (Editor for Rec.
G.651.1, G.652 and G.657) and IEC
(Chairman of IEC SC86A and Convenor of
IEC 86A/WG1).

Giancarlo De Marchis
Giancarlo De Marchis is an expert in a
number of areas crucial to optical
communications, including theory of
propagation in optical fibers; fiber
measurements; direct detection systems;
coherent optical communication systems;
ultra long-haul, high capacity systems;
optical transport networks, access
networks, and optical Internet. In his
25-year career at Fondazione Ugo Bordoni,
Giancarlo held various research and
research management positions and was
involved in coherent optical
transmission systems, and high speed and
high capacity transmission with
particular emphasis on polarization and
non-linear effects in fiber and
performance of multilevel and binary
coherent systems, among other areas.
Giancarlo has about one hundred
published papers. He is co-author of
"Coherent Optical Communication Systems"
(J. Wiley & Sons, 1995), and co-editor
of "Optical Networks - Design and
Modeling" (Kluwer Academic Publisher,
1999). He has been serving as a Member
of the Board of Directors of Italian
Photonics and Electro-optics special
interest group and Chairman of Fotonica
2001 national conference. Giancarlo has
been active on the Technical Program
Committees of ECOC, OFMC, OFC/IOOC and
Fotonica, and has acted as co-chair of
IOOC/ECOC 2003 Technical Program
Committee.
Giancarlo has been involved in ITU-T
activities both on fibers and systems
since 1980 actively cooperating in the
definition of the first recommendations
under the chairmanship of Mr.
Bonaventura. He has been active in the
European Standard Institute (ETSI) as
well. He has served ITU-T as an expert
in official missions several times. He
is an expert of European Commission for
telecommunications projects evaluation
and assessing.
Since 2002 he is running his own company
working in the fields of photonics and
optical communications. |
Makoto Murakami
Makoto Murakami has been a research engineer in the field of optical communications/network systems in NTT. He was first engaged in
research and development of long haul transmission systems using optical amplifiers and coherent modulation/demodulation schemes at the
emergence of those technologies. After finishing development and deployment of a commercial optically amplified submarine system, he
continued research and development on WDM systems to further increase the fiber transmission capacity. From 2001 to 2003, he worked for
NTT Communications, one of the network operating companies of the NTT group, where he was engaged in construction and operation of international
communication networks mainly in Asia and Pacific areas. Since 2003 he has been an active participant in ITU-T SG15 and been involved in
research and development of large-capacity photonic network systems and standardization of optical transport networks. He received the Ph. D.
degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyo.

Paolo Rosa, Head of Workshops and
Promotion Division, (ITU/TSB)
Mr Rosa received his degree in physics
in 1974 in Rome, Italy, and joined the
R&D branch of the Italian Ministry of
Communication working on optical fibers
transmission networks, in national and
international standards and leading
quality control inspection teams for
international telecommunication projects
using optical technologies.
He was head of national delegations for
standardization and research studies on
optical fibers and systems performed in
IEC, ITU, ETSI, CECC, COST and
represented the Italian Ministry of
Communications in various international
institutions including the European
Commission task force for the G7 pilot
projects on the Information Society.
Paolo was appointed as expert and senior
advisor by the Italian Foreign Office,
the UNDP and ITU for telecommunication
projects in various developing countries
worldwide.
In 1997 he joined the ITU-T secretariat
in Geneva as Counselor responsible for
Study Groups 6 (Outside plant), and SG
15 (Optical and other transport
networks) and representing ITU in
various events. Since November 2004 he
is the Head of the Workshops and
Promotion Division of the ITU
Standardization Sector, organizing
events and promoting new ITU-T
activities for resolutions concerning
developing countries, conformance and
interoperability, universities.
He is author of several papers on
optical technologies published in
international technical magazines and
speaker and lecturer in universities,
international conferences, seminars and
workshops. |
