The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have established a Joint Smart Cities Task Force to co-ordinate international standardization for smart cities in line with the sustainable development goal 11 (SDG11) “Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. The Joint Task Force leads a comprehensive dialogue by engaging relevant stakeholders in identifying standardization solutions for smart cities.

Mandate and scope of the IEC-ISO-ITU Joint Smart Cities Task Force (J-SCTF)

  • To build synergies and to promote  minimization of overlap  as applicable on ongoing works in ITU-T, IEC and ISO related to smart cities and communities;
  • To maximize efforts in order to identify new areas of cooperation related to smart cities and communities;
  • To develop a holistic view on smart cities and communities taking into consideration the scope, areas of work and expertise of ITU-T, IEC and ISO to support smart cities and communities’ development;
  • To prioritize future items that may arise from future World Smart City Forum (WSCF)
  • ITU-T, ISO and IEC should designate the experts to work on the action items identified as priority by the Task Force;
  • To oversee the implementation of these action items;
  • To share the ongoing development of the work items produced by the three organizations to minimize duplication
