Dr. Mamello THINYANE ​​
Principal Research Fellow, United Nations University 

​Mamello is a Principal Research Fellow at the United Nations University institute in Macau where he leads the Smart Citizen Cyber Resilience project. This project is undertaking policy-relevant research, innovating technology tools, and undertaking capacity-building activities to enhance the resilience of citizens and civil society stakeholders in smart digital futures in Macau SAR and the Asia-Pacific region. He also leads research on Data and Sustainable Development, formerly the Small Data Lab, which critically investigates the sustainable development data assemblages and develops tools to support the active participation of civil society stakeholders in these data ecosystems.

Mamello holds a PhD in Computer Science from Rhodes University and has over 15 years of experience working on multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary Digital Development projects in Africa and Asia.  Before joining UNU, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, as well as the Director for the Telkom Centre of Excellence in ICT for Development at the same institute. He is also a former Visiting Researcher at the Australian Centre for Cyber Security at the University of New South Wales - Australian Defense Force Academy.
