Project Title : Convergence in Digital Broadcasting

Aimed at Asia-Pacific

Background:

Many nations in the world are drawing their ICT Strategies linked to economic and social development of respective nations. Asia-Pacific nations too are working on digitalisation plans that set out a roadmap to deliver better services, reduce waste, encourage innovation and improve ICT deployment across nation effectively to be competitive globally while maintaining sustainable growth. Broadcasting is an integral and important component of such strategy. The strategies and roadmaps are intended to help align processes to achieve at least acceptable level of digitalization for broadcasters within the time targets.

Current Information and Communication Technologies will enable nations to leverage on broadband infrastructure, to utilises cloud, mobile and wireless technologies, and to engage social and other media for sharing data for improving quality of life of citizens in of those countries.

Actions and Outcomes:

However, Asia-Pacific requires some assistance in implementing digital broadcasting strategies and plans towards building such infrastructures. With ITU, ABU will be carrying out projects to create awareness on need for ICT especially in a time where high degree of convergence has taken place among information technology, communication and broadcasting. Such projects will address issues and expects to assist Asia-Pacific in

1. Capacity building on digitalization process to handle policies, regulation and human resources skill,

2. Providing expertise in new media technologies and IP delivery,

3. Frequency and coverage planning,

4. Very importantly, setting-up Emergency Warning Broadcasting Systems ( EWBS) to mitigate and manage risk due to disasters and saving human lives,

5. Making broadcasters understand the implementation of digital broadcasting standards for careful planning and optimal utilization of scarce resources through face-to-face and online regional seminars and workshops.
