Webinar: National Cybersecurity Strategies – Implementation and Monitoring

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized an online discussion on the lifecycle development and implementation of a National Cybersecurity Strategy. Cybersecurity experts with different backgrounds and from different sectors shared their experiences and knowledge on the importance of national cybersecurity strategy related actions to build greater cybersecurity resilience and readiness. Additionally, they also elaborated the approaches and opportunities for better collaboration amongst different national and international stakeholders. Further building on continued international cooperation and knowledge sharing in the cybersecurity domain is especially important in the current COVID-19 crisis.

BACKGROUND

Modern societies are globally interconnected and increasingly dependent on digital assets. The significant benefits in the digitization of governmental services and products, and citizens' positive experience in the adoption of the innovative technologies and services continue to build. However, together with digitalization, cybersecurity risks are growing and there has been significant increase in costs over the past decade due to cybersecurity incidents. Indeed, we are starting to see the need for more commitment from the Member States, especially by developing and implementing effective National Cybersecurity Strategies, through which a nation can improve the cybersecurity posture of its critical digital infrastructure and contribute to its broader socio-economic development. National leaders need to be strategic about the opportunities offered and the risks posed to their countries in the digital environment; they also need to establish a clear vision of the digital transformation future they wish to create ensuring safety and security for its citizens and businesses.
