Building a more inclusive digital world for current and future generations

BDT Youth

Our mission is to build a world that fosters digital inclusion through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for every young person, including those in vulnerable situations, for their social and economic development and empowerment.

The ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is pivotal in empowering young people worldwide through ICTs. Since 2001, BDT has been a pioneer in addressing the topic of digital inclusion for young generation including through development of regional and global Youth Forums ( see more in the video).

By actively promoting ICTs to young people through national, regional, and international events, BDT offers guidance and leads the development of activities, educational programs, and strategic partnerships that embrace diversity and inclusivity. BDT also leads Generation Connect, its flagship initiative on youth that aims to amplify young voices in the digital development dialogue. Be a part of BDT's mission to harness the transformative power of ICTs, equipping and empowering the next generation.

As digital natives and early adopters of ICTs, youth are uniquely positioned to harness the power of digital technologies in innovative and imaginative ways. Worldwide, 79% of 15-24-year-olds use the Internet, 14% more than other age groups. Youth in low-income countries use the Internet roughly twice as much as other age groups. These statistics show that young people are key drivers in advancing the digital dialogue and technological development.

ICTs have the potential to revolutionize youth education, open doors to new digital job opportunities, and empower them to become meaningfully engaged members of the digital economy, society, and environment. However, to fully benefit from the transformative power of technology, young people should have equal and equitable access to available, affordable, and accessible ICTs. BDT ensures that initiatives prioritize youth, especially those in vulnerable situations for maximum impact - #BDT4Impact!
