Information Session on Fostering E-waste Management across Africa, 17 June 2021

The information session on Fostering e-waste management across Africa took place on Thursday, 17 June 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 (CET / CAT). The session brought together around 50 participants from Africa including national government representatives, industry, mainstream media, international e-waste experts, development banks, international organisations and e-waste experts.

The event presented the toolkit Policy Practices for E-waste Management that draws on experiences from developing countries and emerging markets, particularly from African countries. The toolkit provides governments with a guide that outlines the system requirements for the management of e-waste.

The session showcased examples of government efforts in the region, with presentations from Malawi, South Africa and Rwanda, and explored the need for regional cooperation and harmonization to combat the growing e-waste challenge in Africa.

The event highlighted how ITU is providing support to countries across Africa in developing a national e-waste policy and monitoring the quantity and flow of electronic waste in response to the growing magnitude of e-waste, including discarded ICT equipment, and its impacts on the environment, the economy and human health.
