NBTC-ITU Volunteers (NIV) 2016

The NBTC-ITU Volunteers programme was established in 2014. In the past two years, we sent more than 60 volunteers to help educate rural communities to understand the benefits and usage of digital technologies and ICT. In total 16 provinces over all regions of Thailand have been visited, covering 21 USONET centres.

NIV 2016

During the students’ summer vacation (from June to August), the NIV programme is open for applications. Volunteers are assigned to selected USONET centres located in other provinces for a working period of 6 weeks. After an applicant has been selected as a volunteer, the programme provides an orientation and training programme (NIV Boot Camp), which takes about 1 week to prepare the volunteers before they are dispatched to their working areas. After the working period has finished, the volunteers have to prepare for a final evaluation and presentation of their work, which takes about 1 week to complete for all the volunteers.

Boot Camp

The purpose of the boot camp is to prepare the volunteers before dispatching to their working areas. This year, the Boot Camp will be held at The Pine Resort during 13-17 June 2016. The boot camp covers the following topics:

  • An introduction to the programme and related organisations.
  • Intel Easy Steps for the trainers (train-the-trainer).
  • Website development.
  • Fundamentals of photography.
  • Video production.
  • How to use the Internet safely and securely, and the law related to this.
  • First aid and a basic survival guide.
  • Topics from relevant experts.
  • Team building activities.
  • The volunteers working guidelines and how to stay in the working areas.

Volunteers’ activity during the working period

NIVs will be dispatched to rural community internet centres (USONET) and work in collaboration with the communities during 27 June - 29 July 2016. The main activities for NIV consist of:

  • Community readiness and a potential evaluation and working plan.
  • Train Intel Easy Steps, and other assigned ICT topics, to the local people, which may include government
  • officers, teachers, students, business owners, youths and any people using USONET centres or any places that are equipped with ICT training tools.
  • Develop a website for the local community or USONET centre or government unit, i.e. a sub-district administration organization or school.
  • Make at least 2 video clips to promote the volunteers’ work and the NIV programme, and to promote local knowledge.
  • Support other local activities which are beneficial to the local community and people, e.g. using digital channels to promote local businesses, how to use e-commerce, and how to create knowledge media.
  • Activities that support and promote local culture and traditions.

Volunteer Evaluations

When volunteers have completed their working period they then have to attend an evaluation session arrange by the NIV programme, where volunteers present their work to the programme committee. This year, the evaluation is tentatively schedule during 30-31 July 2016.

  • Present the activities carried out during the working period in the local communities, identifying outputs, issues, challenges and future programme development suggestions.
  • Present 2 videos presentations.
  • Prepare for a question and answer session with the committee.

The committee will select the top three best performing teams based on their volunteer work and presentations. The Programme may provide prizes, which will be announced at a later date.

Closing Ceremony

NIV volunteers must attend a closing ceremony at the office of the NBTC, where the top three performing teams will present their works. Other teams may present as well depending on the programme schedule. Prizes will be given to all of the best teams in each subject / assignment, and certificates of achievement will be provided to all NIV volunteers who have completed their assignments.
