Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online

The 14th International Conference "Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online" was held from the 29th of September to the 2nd of October 2020, both virtually and in Warsaw, Poland.

The International Telecommunication Union, as the co-organizer of this regional event, kindly invited all stakeholders to use this as an opportunity to build human capacity in field of child online protection, while advancing on partnership building to address implementation challenges at the national and regional level. The organization of this event led by the Polish and German Safer Internet Centers, working together within the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility Programme. The main partner of the conference was the Orange Foundation and the partner Google. The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Poland and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Poland. ​

This conference was held within the framework of the ITU Regional Initiative for Europe EUR4 “Enhancing trust and confidence in the use of information and communication technologies”, adopted by the WTDC-17, Buenos Aires. A special session on “Global Child Online Protection Guidelines: Implementing regional and national measures”  was held by the ITU Office for Europe on the 1st of October 2020, 9:00 – 10:30 AM. This session offered a unique platform for presentation of the COP Guidelines as well as demonstration of a series of examples of the national roll-outs of the Guidelines. 

The conference covered a large set of issues related to the safety of children and young people on the internet while outreaching stakeholders of the European community working on Child Online Protection. The conference, targeting all key players such as representatives of the education sector, NGOs, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies and Internet content service providers aimed at raising awareness and reflecting on the new challenges and opportunities in fighting online threats as well as to popularize best practices across different sectors.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s edition was conducted in new formula. On 29th and 30th of September 2020 plenary sessions of the conference took place at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. Organizers anticipated the possibility of direct participation in the event with maintaining all safety rules.  The conference’s workshops took place entirely in form of an online meetings on 1st and 2nd of October 2020.
