This session on the development of broadband in rural areas took place at ITU Headquarters (ITU Montbrillant building, Room K) in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, 25 September 2019, from 09:30 to 12:30 following the ITU-D Study Group 1 Question 5/1 Rapporteur Group meeting dedicated to “Telecommunications/ICTs for rural and remote areas”. The session contributes to the implementation of the Question 5/1 workplan.

[09:40 - 10:45] Session 1: Broadband technologies in rural areas and key trends in broadband access technologies

Session 1 presentations and discussion topics will cover the following:

Broadband technologies in rural areas and key trends in broadband access technologies
Available, affordable, accessible and sustainable solutions to connect rural and remote areas, as well as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Appropriate access technologies and solutions for rural and remote areas
Trends observed in use and any changes in such technologies observed over the past five year
Expected changes in the near future or the next five years.
