ITU Workshop on Vehicular Multimedia Implementation

Introduction
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized a workshop on “Vehicular Multimedia Implementation”, 10 December 2020. The workshop was followed by the 11th meeting of the ITU-T Focus Group on Vehicular Multimedia (FG-VM), planned on the following day, 11 December 2020.

Background
As the vision for vehicles expands from being a means of transport to the third infotainment and living space (after home and office), the potential for new services is  massive in automotive industry. In-vehicle-infotainment (IVI) platforms are serving as the nucleus between car manufacturers, OEMs and consumers by offering a shared architecture for the delivery of a range of services including bookings, payments, connected entertainment, car-sharing, navigation etc. Delivering on this promise, requires steering through various of complexities including heterogeneous services, communication protocols, architectural frameworks, security and safety (e.g. driver distraction), among others. The FG-VM is venturing into pre-standardization aspects related to vehicular multimedia and has already facilitated the development of an ITU-T Recommendation on “Use cases and requirements for the vehicular multimedia networks” (ITU-T F.749.3). Building on that effort the FG-VM is finalizing a Technical Report on “Vehicular Multimedia Architecture” (FGVM-TR02) that will form the bases of a new ITU-T Recommendation. The next step will be to study implementation aspects, which is the rationale for this workshop.

Objective
This workshop seeked to explore the various implementation scenarios for the delivery and of vehicular multimedia services. It also provided a holistic picture of the ongoing standardization work under the Focus Group on Vehicular Multimedia (FG-VM) in terms of requirements and architectural frameworks for vehicular multimedia systems (VMS). The main discussion points from this workshop laid the foundation for charting out the activities for FG-VM Working Group 3 on “Implementation Aspects of Vehicular Multimedia”.

Target Audience
Participation in the workshop was open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates and Academic Institutions and to any individual from a country that is a member of ITU who wished to contribute to the work.
