ITU Workshop on "Voice Recognition Implementation in Vehicles"

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized a workshop on “Voice Recognition Implementation in Vehicles”, that took place virtually on 30 June 2022  from 09h30-12h30 CEST. The workshop was followed by a meeting of the ITU-T Focus Group on Vehicular Multimedia Working Group 3 (FG-VM WG3), on 1 July 2022, also held virtually from 9h30 to 12h30 CEST.

Background
During the last FG-VM/WG3 meeting which took place on 24 May 2022, a member contribution highlighted a set of relevant technologies to implement voice recognition in vehicles. The associated discussion, among various stakeholders, highlighted the need to identify specific requirements on voice recognition in vehicles, which may be included in the scope of an international standard. It was also noted that such implementation aspects for voice recognition may need to be included in the current ITU FG-VM deliverable about “Vehicular Multimedia Implementation”.

Changan Automobile, Aston Martin, Huawei and other stakeholders expressed interest in organizing a workshop to discuss further the specific aspects of voice recognition in vehicles. The stakeholders also emphasized on the potential differences that would exist in the implementation  of this technolog, amongst different car models. Thus, for addressing the expected scope of our technical report and especially the future ITU-T Recommendation, which ITU-T SG16 may develop based on the FG-VM work, it is essential to propose suggestions for implementing voice recognition, including views about options or configurations. According to the FG-VM discussion, it seems that Voice Recognition is fully based on deep learning processes developed by supplier and OEM and does not rely on standards. It was also mentioned that references to standards and initiatives on guidance or certification of voice recognition would need to be studied.

Objectives
The aim of this workshop was to:

Target Audience
Participation was open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia and to any individual from a country which is a member of the ITU and who wishes to contribute to the work. This includes individuals who are also members of international, regional and national organizations. Participation to the workshop is free of charge.
