Stablecoins opportunities for digital financial inclusion

This session considered the potential of digital currencies (i.e. CBDCs and stablecoins) for bridging the financial inclusion gap. According to the World Bank Global Findex report 2021, some 1.4 billion adults worldwide do not have access to financial services. However, digital currencies could potentially offer low-cost, safe, real-time payments and therefore could be used In government programs and remittances.

Importance of offline payments for CBDCs and financial inclusion

One feature that is often required of a CBDC for financial inclusion is the ability to make payments offline. This ensures that payments can be made even if there is no connection to the Internet, e.g. in remote locations. 
The panel considered some potential solutions for offline transactions for CBDC and discuss considerations for technical standards that may be needed.

Round table session on Design of Retail CBDC

Retail CBDCs have attracted a lot of interest in the central bank community. According to an IMF study, 85% of central banks world-wide are working on this subject.
In this session, we considered the following questions: a) What problem does a retail CBDC solve? b) What exactly are we trying to achieve? c) How can technologies like DLTs provide solution for CBDC and d) What kind of technical standards are required?

Showcase of offline payments for digital currencies
