ITU Workshop on "Standardization and innovation for multimedia and cable TV ecosystems"

​​The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organised the ITU Workshop on “Standardization and innovation for multimedia and cable TV ecosystems” which took  place in Tokyo, Japan on 6 September 2024 from 13h00 to 19h20 Tokyo time/JST. The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) of the Japanese Administration​Remote participation was provided for the workshop. The workshop was held in English, with interpretation in Japanese. The  workshop was collocated with SG9 meeting (Tokyo, 2-10 September 2024).  

The workshop brought together industry experts, innovators, and professionals to explore and shape the future of multimedia and cable TV through standardization and innovation. The sessions delved into the consolidation of ITU-T Study Groups 9 (cable TV) and SG16 (multimedia), the future of IP-based media transmission, advancements in AI, the metaverse and video coding, and the evolution of accessible media services. Join us for a series of insightful discussions, collaborative exchanges, and visionary planning as we work towards enhancing and streamlining the multimedia and cable TV ecosystems.

Participation is open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia and to any individual from a country which is a member of the ITU and who wishes to contribute to the work. This also includes individuals who are members of international, regional, and national organizations. Participation in the workshop is free of charge, however registraion is madatory.

​Special Session: ITU-T SG9 & SG16 Consolidation (JMT 9&16, TSAG, WTSA-24)
Join us for an insightful session on the consolidation of ITU-T Study Groups 9 and 16, a pivotal step towards streamlining and enhancing the synergy of ITU's standardization efforts to strengthen the related ecosystems. This session will delve into the outcomes of the Joint Management Team's (JMT9&16) meticulous work since January this year, focusing on the proposed formation of the new Study Group "C" (SGC). We will explore the harmonized mandate, the consolidated Questions on coordination and accessibility, and the envisioned future structure of the new study group. This consolidation aims to unify expertise from the multimedia and cable TV industries into a cohesive group continuing to be a welcoming environment, reducing overlap and fostering innovation.

This session explores the impact of IP-based media delivery on the cable television and future of standards for cable, IPTV and content delivery industries. Topics include business opportunities, the technical transition from RF to IP called "IP migration", innovative IPTV, content delivery application (including digital signage, etc.), standard roadmaps, and the challenges of implementing cable TV in developing countries.
