Forum on "Driving the Connect 2020 Agenda"
Nassau, The Bahamas, 16 December 2015
Introduction
The Connect 2020 Agenda has been established to shape the future of the ICT sector. Under Goal 3 “Sustainability” of the Connect 2020 Agenda, two specific targets have been established for environmental sustainability of the ICT sector which focus on GHG emissions and e-waste. Target 3.2 calls for the reduction of the volume of redundant e-waste by 50% by the year 2020 while target 3.3 advocates that Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by the telecommunication/ICT sector should be decreased per device by 30% by 2020.
This Forum will provide an overview of the how ICT sector is responding to environmental challenges established in these targets, while the aforementioned sector continues to grow. The sector acknowledges that the energy consumption and GHG emissions from ICT goods, networks and services are increasing. Additionally, innovations in the ICT sector also lead to e-waste generation, which if not handled properly may have environmental and health impacts. However, at the same time, the sector recognizes all the positive aspects that ICTs can bring to the planet in terms of GHG emissions and e-waste generation reduction.
In order to tackle these environmental challenges and to achieve the Goal 11 and Goal 13 as stipulated in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the ICT sector has defined a high level integrated roadmap composed of two individual roadmaps to cover E-waste and GHG emissions. These roadmaps turn these challenges into an opportunity for the ICT sector and drive the attainment of the targets based on a technical and standardized framework that envisages the participation of all concerned stakeholders. This Forum, organized by ITU will bring together these stakeholders to discuss the future of the sector with reference to promoting global environmental sustainability and meet the SDGs.
