Introduction
The International Telecommunication Union and the NGMN Alliance jointly organized a conference on “Licensing Practices in 5G Industry Segments” which took place at the ITU headquarters, Geneva from the 29-30 January 2019.   

Objectives
With special focus on the development of 5G, the “Joint NGMN and ITU Conference on Licensing Practices in 5G Industry Segments” facilitated sharing and discussing present-day licensing practices and related issues in different industry segments. The Conference discussed issues that stakeholders needed to be aware of, or needed  to timely address, share licensors’, licensees’ and pool administrators’ requirements on patent pools/platforms, identified proposed practices and conduct for licensors and licensees in a 5G environment and identified requirements for increasing transparency and assessing essentiality of SEPs in 5G, and looked at the main key issues to be addressed in the coming years and how to resolve them.

Each session reserved timed for Q & A and interactive discussions between panelists and the audience.

Target Audience
The event was open to members and non-members of the ITU, and it allowed a unique mix of standards bodies, industry players and government representatives from around the world who exchanged ideas and searched for possible solutions on this key issue of evolving telecommunication technologies.

Registration and Fees
The Conference was free of charge, but pre-registration was required before 15 January 2019. Due to limited availability of seats, registration was confirmed on a first-come-first-serve basis.
