Chris Barnes

 

Chris Barnes is Chair of ITU-WMO-UNESCO IOC Joint Task Force on climate change monitoring and disaster warning. He is Professor Emeritus, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS), University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Previously, he was Director of NEPTUNE Canada, the world’s first regional cabled ocean observatory, and Director, SEOS and Centre for Earth and Ocean Research. Geology degrees (Birmingham, Ottawa) preceded appointments including chair of earth/ocean science departments at University of Waterloo, Ontario and Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Director General, Sedimentary and Marine Branch, Geological Survey of Canada. His research involves geology, micropaleontology, stratigraphy, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and ocean observing systems.

He has served as President of Geological Association of Canada, Canadian Geoscience Council, and Academy of Science, Royal Society of Canada, and as member of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, International Ocean Drilling Program and International Commission on Stratigraphy.

He was awarded Fellowship in Royal Society of Canada and National Academy of Sciences, Cordoba, Argentina and Honorary D.Sc, University of Waterloo, and was appointed to Order of Canada. Additional to Queen's Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals, he was presented with several medals and awards from Royal Society of Canada, Geological Association of Canada, Pander Society, and Micropalaeontological Society.
