Biographies

Gabriel Barta - Head of Technical Coordination

Gabriel Barta is Swiss, of Hungarian origin and educated in Britain. A computer scientist for many years, he worked in research and industry and taught at universities in the USA and Denmark. His particular interests in computers were computer language theory, artificial intelligence and telecom applications. As IEC Head of technical coordination since 1997, he has broad responsibilities in technical, management and strategic areas. He is secretary to the Conformity Assessment Board and to the Market Strategy Board, is responsible in the IEC for ISO/IEC JTC 1 (the major information technology standardization committee), and manages various committees reporting to the Market Strategy Board and the Standardization Management Board.
 

Florent Frederix - Head of Sector “Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)” Information Society and Media Directorate-General, European Commission

Florent Frederix has been working in the Information Society and Media Directorate-General of the European Commission since 2001 and is head of sector since January 1, 2006.

The RFID sector manages parts of the 7th framework research programme, the policy aspects and international cooperation on RFID and the emerging Internet of Things. Recent work includes a Recommendation on the implementation of privacy and information security principles in RFID-enabled applications and a communication on the Internet of Things.
 
Before joining the EU commission Mr. Frederix spent 20 years in the Information and Telecom industry. During the second half of the 1980ies as co-ordinator of the team that developed the AESTHEDES system, named in 1989 by the referential Seybold report “A world leading line art design system”. In the 1990ies he became research programs manager at Alcatel Microelectronics, the business division known for ground breaking work on ADSL (broadband Internet).
 
Mr Frederix has an educational engineering background in Electronics, Computer Science and holds an MBA and Doctoral degree in Economics.
 
Bilel Jamoussi - Chief Study Groups Department, ITU-T/TSB
 
Dr. Bilel Jamoussi is Chief of the Study Groups Department at the International Telecommunication Union Standardization Bureau in Geneva Switzerland. He leads the ITU-T Standards Development Staff.
Before joining ITU, Bilel worked for Nortel for 15 years in Canada and then in the United States where he held several leadership positions including Strategic Standards, Advanced Technology, University Research, Software Development for routing/switching platforms, and Data Network Engineering of major international customer networks.
As Director of the Strategic Standards organization within the office of the Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Bilel provided strategic technology direction and leadership for Nortel’s involvement in more than 90 standards development organizations, forums and consortia. He also contributed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) one laptop per child (OLPC) initiative.
 
Bilel is an IEEE Senior Member. He was elected to the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Board of Governors (BOG) and the IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group (CAG). He served on the IEEE Standards Education Committee, the IEEE-SA Nominations and Appointments Committee, the IEEE-SA BOG International ad hoc, and the Technical Liaison from IEEE-SA to ITU-T and ITU-D.
Bilel participated in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and authored a number of Request for Comments (RFCs).
He has 22 granted and filed US patents in diverse areas: packet, optical, wireless, and quality of service.
Bilel received a BS. ’89, MS. ’92, and PhD ’95 degrees in Computer Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, USA.
Rob Steele - ISO Secretary-General
 
Rob Steele took up the post of ISO Secretary-General on 1 January 2009. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Standards New Zealand (SNZ) until 2007. Mr. Steele is a Chartered Accountant, a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors, and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. He was also Secretary of the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) from 2002 to April 2007. During his tenure as CEO of the New Zealand standards body, he represented SNZ on ISO's governance bodies where he was involved in developing policies on the global relevance of International Standards. Prior to joining SNZ Rob Steele was Chief Executive of an electricity distribution company in New Zealand for eight years; and worked in New Zealand and Canada in financial audit and advisory services for an international accounting firm for 18 years. He has also served as a director of several companies in the manufacturing and service sectors during his career.
