JVET - Joint Video Experts Team

THIS IS AN ARCHIVED VERSION OF THE JVET PAGE FOR THE 2017-2021 STUDY PERIOD. PLEASE SEE THE UPDATED VERSION  HERE.

The Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) between VCEG (Q6/16) and ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29’s MPEG was created on 27 October 2017 to develop Versatile Video Coding (VVC), a new video compression standard with capabilities beyond HEVC (ITU-T H.265 | ISO/IEC 23008-2). This formal effort followed the exploration phase started in October 2015 and conducted by experts of both groups.

Upon completion of the first edition of the new standard (ITU-T H.266 | ISO/IEC 23090-3), the scope of JVET was amended in 2020 to also cover other existing jointly developed video compression algorithms, such as H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, and exploration studies of candidate technology for potential future video coding standardization action.

Major milestones:
2017-12: End of proposal registration
2018-03: Subjective testing
2018-04: Evaluation of proposals and first test model
2020-07: First version of new standard completed
2020-08: Approval of first version
2020-11: Publication of first edition as ITU-T H.266
