Committed to connecting the world

Accelerating climate action with digital technologies

As we work towards realising the vision of the Paris Agreement, digital technologies continue to play a key role in climate change monitoring, adaptation, mitigation, and response. In its role as the UN agency for digital technologies, ITU is working with all partners to leverage and raise awareness of the positive impact of ICTs on climate action.

Climate Monitoring

Data from Earth observation and remote sensing systems is crucial for climate monitoring, weather prediction, and disaster monitoring and mitigation. ITU plays a key role in creating the regulatory and technical bases for the development and effective operation of satellite and terrestrial climate monitoring and data dissemination systems.
The work of ITU deals with science services and systems for remote sensing and space applications, providing vital data on the earth and its atmosphere, helping study and monitor climate change, assist and predict the weather and monitor and predict natural disasters.

Examples of our work include:
ITU-R Study Group 7 standards for science services, including remote sensing and space applications.
- Earth Exploration-Satellite Service handbook.
- Use of Radio Spectrum for Meteorology handbook.

Disaster resilient ICT infrastructure

ITU is playing a leading role in ensuing digital technologies are central to all stages of disaster management and risk reduction. Digital technologies present new opportunities to reach billions of people faster and more effectively, whether before, during, or after disasters. Working with partners ITU is supporting Member States with setting up early warning and monitoring systems, and providing emergency telecommunications equipment when disasters strike.

Examples of our work include:
- Early warnings for all initiative.
- Disaster connectivity map.
- Emergency radiocommunications support.
- Focus Group on AI for Natural Disaster Management (FG-AI4NDM).
- Capacity building through emergency telecommunication online trainings.
- ITU-T Study Group 5 standards that support the deployment of digital technologies in accelerating climate adaptation.
- ITU-D Study Group Question 6/2 on ICTs and the Environment studies on ICTs and climate change.
