FerMUN 2013 : Model UN conference

FerMUN 2013ITU is proud to be hosting its first ever Model UN conference, which will took place at ITU headquarters in Geneva from 9-11 January 2013.

Model UN is a global UN programme for senior high school students that gives young people the chance to organize and participate in a simulated UN conference. Students choose a theme, research the topic, elect senior conference officials from among their number, organize their 3-day work programme, and agree on key resolutions.

The event is being hosted under by the Ferney Lycée International under the FerMUN banner.
Reflecting ITU’s invitation to host this year’s event, the FerMUN students have chosen as their topic for 2013 ‘ICTs as the way forward in development, peace, and prosperity’. The conference will welcome nearly 350 students from schools across Europe, and will be completely bilingual English/French, with students themselves handling the interpretation. Topics on the agenda for debate include cybersecurity, e-waste, Internet as a human right, social media, emergency communications and much more.
ITU Secretary-General Dr Hamadoun I. Touré and other high-level participants will welcome the students at the official opening session on January 9th at 15:30. The main sessions of the conference, including the opening ceremony, plenary sessions and closing ceremony will all be viewable over live and archived webcast.

About MUN

fermun logo.jpgThe Model UN concept gives students the chance to debate topical issues of relevance to the UN system, refine their research skills, learn to collaborate with other students from schools throughout Europe, and gain confidence when speaking in public debates.

Before the event, groups of students are assigned a country they will represent, and prepare their interventions based on that country’s actual stance on the topic under discussion, which they are expected to research independently and present in a professional manner.

Students participate in business attire, and manage their own interpretation, documentation, communications and translation services.
