In 2018, ITU published a report on the global economic contribution of broadband, digitization and ICT regulation. Following the report, ITU received calls asking for a deeper analysis focused on specific regions of the world.

Economic Contribution of Broadband, Digitization and ICT Regulation: Econometric Modelling for Africa focuses on the Africa region. The report shows the economic impact of fixed and mobile broadband across the African continent, and it also shows the impact of digitization and the impact of a policy and regulatory framework on digitization in Africa. Specifically, the report – which begins with a summary of the global study – identifies which technologies should become a part of policy and how to ensure that the policies that are deployed stimulate the development of the digital ecosystem in Africa.
