Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will reside in densely packed megacities, according to data from the United Nations.

As the global population continues to grow, cities will need to adapt to support the unique needs of their citizens. ICTs will play a key role to fulfill this purpose.

This report provides methods for building and improving connectivity to support smart cities and societies by exploring: concept design, business models and policy, smart applications, safety and trust, as well as key performance indicators, among others. It includes guidelines based on real-life case studies of ITU-D members worldwide, whose experiences and lessons learned can help make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
