The ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies (ITU J-FET) has published its first regular issue of 2021, which focuses on research areas of high relevance to the work of ITU, and of interest to academia, industry and governments. This publication includes forewords of the ITU Secretary-General and the Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau as well as a message from the Editor-in-Chief, and eight high level, original papers from internationally recognized researchers. These papers provide analyses into emerging technologies and forward-looking solutions around networks and communication systems.

This inaugural issue of the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies (ITU J-FET) represents a new chapter of academic scientific research. It includes forewords of the ITU Secretary-General and the Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau as well as a message from the Editor-in-Chief, and ten high level, original papers from internationally recognized researchers. These papers address topics of interest to those involved in all aspects of communications and networking from academia, industry and governments. The publication focuses on research areas of high relevance to the work of ITU, such as the Internet of Things, network automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence, software defined networks, vehicular networks, cognitive radio, infrastructure and spectrum sharing, 5G and beyond networks.
