Eventos del Día internacional de las Niñas en las TIC 2016

Global Youths Awareness & Development Initiative (GYADI)

Abuja, Nigeria, 2016, June 02

The International Girls in ICT Day Celebration which is an initiative backed by ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Guadalajara, 2010) to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs), is a commendable initiative geared towards empowering the girl-child for socio-economic growth, capacity building and sustainable development.

However, the high rate of ICT development in the world today have made it imperative for girls who are less technologically advanced to catch up with technological advancement, so as to bridge the digital divide with their male counterpart.

Meanwhile, the overall objective of the event is focused on an ambitious new target that we (GYADI) have designed to encourage female access to the power of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in Nigeria. That is, girls' access to ICTs must be made a key pillar for the diversification of Nigeria's economy for employment generation & job creation for sustainable national development, which is in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari's Change Mantra, and to promote the Federal Government's ICT for Development (ICT4D) initiative in Nigeria.

However, the highlights and benefits of this august event will be the training of at least 50 girls each from the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which will be training of a total of about 1,850 girls across the country in the 6 (Six) geo-political zones of the country, with concentration on different ICT skills and ICT Capacity Building Programmes, such as;

  • Profiting from the Internet
  • GSM/Computer Assembling & Repairs
  • System Networking (Wireless/Wired)
  • Web Technology (Website Designing/Maintenance)
  • System Engineering
  • PC Repairs/Upgrade, PC Security/Power Systems
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Graphic Designs
  • Data Publishing
  • Film Production/Video Editing, Shooting, Photography
  • Sales/Maintenance of Computers/Printers of different make etc

All these ICT empowerment programmes are important to making the girls to be self-dependent and contribute meaningfully towards the sustainable development of their various States in particular and Nigeria at large. It will also enable them to be self-reliant and create employment opportunities for them, and as well make them become active members of the Global Information and Knowledge Society.
