Space-based radio astronomy observations provide information that cannot be obtained with Earth-based radio telescopes.

In those portions of the spectrum where the Earth’s atmosphere is transparent to radio waves, space- and Earth-based radio astronomy observations can be made in the same bands. The threshold levels of interference detrimental to radio astronomy observations were developed for Earth-based observations. In portions of the spectrum that can be observed only by space-based radio telescopes, no protection criteria have been developed specifically for space-based radio astronomy observations.
